From 2014, all newly registered vehicles must meet the requirements of the Euro 6 emission standard. Compared with Euro 5, Euro 6 implements an 80 percent further reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions and a 66 percent reduction in permitted particulate mass. Euro 6 sees the sophisticated MAN engine technology with Common Rail injection combined with the EGR system for regulated exhaust gas recirculation. Additions downstream of the engine are the closed CRT particulate filter system and SCR system. The two-stage turbo charging provides enhanced moving-off dynamics and increases engine efficiency. The SCR and CRT systems are located in the two-stage exhaust silencer, incorporating the particulate filter and the downstream catalytic converter for selective catalytic reduction.The particulate filter has an electronic monitoring feature that indicates when cleaning is required. The particulate filter also offers a separation rate of up to 99 percent. The system is continuously regenerated by the oxidation of the soot particulates retained by the filter material into gaseous carbon dioxide. The particulate filter is therefore very low-maintenance. The CRT filter is a well-known feature of the MAN city bus; this is the first time it has been implemented in a truck.Demand-based AdBlue® injection takes place downstream of the CRT particulate filter. In the SCR catalytic converter module, the ammonia from the AdBlue fluid enables the subsequent chemical conversion of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water. The ammonia blocking catalytic converter prevents the escape of excess ammonia -- known as ammonia slip.MAN is synonymous with efficiency and has pursued a clear strategy in development of its Euro 6 vehicles true to its brand promise "Consistently efficient". In this context, the combination of the key series-proven technologies for Euro 6 offers maximum reliability and economy. The fuel consumption of Euro 6 engines remains at the outstanding level offered by the Euro 5, EEV versions, while AdBlue consumption is halved.
