World's first production car with laser high beams

With the new laser high beams, one laser module per headlight generates a cone of light with twice the range of the all‑LED headlight. Each module comprises four high‑power laser diodes. With a diameter of just 300 micrometers, these generate a blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers. A phosphor converter transforms this into roadworthy white light with a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin -- ideal conditions for the human eye that enable the driver to recognize contrast more easily and help prevent fatigue. The laser spot, which is active at speeds of 60 km/h (37.3 mph) and above, supplements the LED high beam in the R8 LMX and greatly enhances visibility and safety. An intelligent camera‑based sensor system detects other road users and actively adjusts the light pattern to exclude them.

The Audi R8 (14,9 -- 12,4 l/100 km [15.8 -- 19.0 US mpg]; 349 -- 289 g CO2 per km [561.7 -- 465.1 g/mile]) is the dynamic, top‑of‑the‑line Audi model. Its high-revving, mid‑mounted engine, double wishbone suspension and ASF (Audi Space Frame) aluminum body are closely based on racing. The Audi R8 LMX is available as a coupe with a production run limited to 99 vehicles. With 419 kW (570 hp) and 540 Nm (398.3 lb‑ft) of torque, its 5.2 liter, V10 engine accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 3.4 seconds. Top speed is 320 km/h (198.8 mph), and average consumption is 12.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (299 grams CO2 per kilometer) [18.2 US mpg/481.2 g/mile]. A compact, seven‑speed S tronic transfers the power to the quattro permanent all‑wheel drive system. 19‑inch wheels are combined with carbon‑fiber ceramic brake discs, which up front measure 380 millimeters (15.0 in) in diameter. Red anodized brake calipers shine behind the exclusive designer wheels. The R8 LMX is shod with 235/35 R 19 tires up front and 305/30 R 19 tires at the rear.

The Audi R8 LMX will take to the streets this summer. The base price in Germany is €210,000.

The V6 biturbo in the Audi RS 5 TDI concept produces 283 kW (385 hp); from 1,250 to 2,000 rpm it transfers 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft. The red-line is at 5,500 rpm. The supplemental electric turbocharger provides for staggering power when starting off. An electric motor replaces the turbine wheel and accelerates the compressor wheel to over 70,000 rpm in a few hundredths of a second. The exhaust turbochargers also provide as much as 2.4 bar of relative boost pressure.
This combination enables the Audi RS 5 TDI concept to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just four seconds. The 200 km/h (124.3 mph) mark is reached in less than 16 seconds, and top speed is 280 km/h (174.0 mph). The average fuel consumption of less than 5.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (less than 140 grams CO2 per kilometer) (44.4 US mpg/225.3 g/mi) documents the outstanding efficiency.
Recuperation is the primary source of the drive energy for the electric turbocharger. To transmit this energy, the RS 5 TDI concept uses a separate 48-volt electrical system that is connected to the conventional 12-volt electrical system via a DC/DC converter. The energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery. The advantage of 48-volt electrical systems is that they enable the transmission of larger amounts of energy. The innovative Audi Robotic Telepresence (ART) provides a one-on-one virtual link that connects dealers across the country with expert technicians at Audi of America. This level of service precision is accomplished through ART's physical design: the system is an advanced, remotely controlled robot that displays the operator's face on a screen while permitting the ability to move around the vehicle. World's first production car with laser high beams

With the new laser high beams, one laser module per headlight generates a cone of light with twice the range of the all‑LED headlight. Each module comprises four high‑power laser diodes. With a diameter of just 300 micrometers, these generate a blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers. A phosphor converter transforms this into roadworthy white light with a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin -- ideal conditions for the human eye that enable the driver to recognize contrast more easily and help prevent fatigue. The laser spot, which is active at speeds of 60 km/h (37.3 mph) and above, supplements the LED high beam in the R8 LMX and greatly enhances visibility and safety. An intelligent camera‑based sensor system detects other road users and actively adjusts the light pattern to exclude them.

The Audi R8 (14,9 -- 12,4 l/100 km [15.8 -- 19.0 US mpg]; 349 -- 289 g CO2 per km [561.7 -- 465.1 g/mile]) is the dynamic, top‑of‑the‑line Audi model. Its high-revving, mid‑mounted engine, double wishbone suspension and ASF (Audi Space Frame) aluminum body are closely based on racing. The Audi R8 LMX is available as a coupe with a production run limited to 99 vehicles. With 419 kW (570 hp) and 540 Nm (398.3 lb‑ft) of torque, its 5.2 liter, V10 engine accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 3.4 seconds. Top speed is 320 km/h (198.8 mph), and average consumption is 12.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (299 grams CO2 per kilometer) [18.2 US mpg/481.2 g/mile]. A compact, seven‑speed S tronic transfers the power to the quattro permanent all‑wheel drive system. 19‑inch wheels are combined with carbon‑fiber ceramic brake discs, which up front measure 380 millimeters (15.0 in) in diameter. Red anodized brake calipers shine behind the exclusive designer wheels. The R8 LMX is shod with 235/35 R 19 tires up front and 305/30 R 19 tires at the rear.

The Audi R8 LMX will take to the streets this summer. The base price in Germany is €210,000.

The 4.2 TDI has more torque than any other engine in the Audi lineup. The latest version in the Audi A8 delivers 850 Nm (626.9 lb-ft) between 2,000 and 2,750 revolutions per minute. Its peak output of 283 kW (385 hp) is available at just 3,750 rpm.
The tremendous power provides for a sporty and composed driving experience. Mated with an eight-speed tiptronic and quattro drivetrain, the V8 diesel accelerates the luxury sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.7 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph).

The top-of-the-line TDI from Audi displaces 4,134 cc (bore x stroke 83.0 mm x 95.5 mm (3.3 in x 3.8 in). Its vermicular cast iron crankcase is a major reason for the engine's comparatively low total weight of approximately 250 kilograms (551.2 lb). Four chain-driven camshafts actuate a total of 32 valves via roller cam followers.
The developers updated the 4.2 TDI for use in the Audi A8. The aluminum pistons got reinforced bowl edges, which, like the new exhaust valves, further improve temperature stability. The common rail system develops up to 2,000 bar of pressure, and piezo inline injectors with newly developed, eight-hole nozzles spray the diesel fuel into the combustion chambers.

Improvements were also made to the two VTG turbochargers, primarily with respect to the mounting of the compressor wheels. Each of the two turbochargers, which produce up to 1.7 bar of relative boost pressure, feeds air to one cylinder bank via a downstream intercooler. With the variable turbine geometry, power begins to develop just slightly above idle speed.

Thanks to this and the highly refined running behavior, the diesel engine can be operated at engine speeds of just 800 rpm if the Audi drive select system is set to efficiency mode. The low engine speed significantly reduces actual fuel consumption. In the ECE cycle, the Audi A8 4.2 TDI clean diesel consumes just 7.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (31.8 US mpg), corresponding to 194 grams CO2/km (312.2 g/mi).

The 4.2 TDI clean diesel in the Audi A8 meets the requirements of the Euro 6 emissions standard. Two heated oxidation catalysts are located close to the engine; the two particulate filters with an SCR coating are located in the rear. A metering pump injects the AdBlue additive that breaks down the nitrogen oxides. New 3.0 TDI with biturbo technology and 235 kW (320 hp). It accelerates the five-door coupe from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 5.2 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph). Average fuel consumption is just 6.1 liters per 100 km (38.6 US mpg), which equates to 162 g CO2 per km (260.7 g/mi). The biturbo TDI is always paired with quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

A sound actuator in the exhaust system gives this diesel engine a rich, resonant sound reminiscent of an eight-cylinder unit. A valve connects the two in-series turbochargers. At low revs it is closed. The small charger with its variable turbine geometry does most of the work, and the large charger is responsible for the pre-compression. From about 2,500 rpm, the valve starts to open and the small charger increasingly transfers the major share of work to its counterpart. Audi has made a great many enhancements to the seven-speed S tronic -- which has superseded the multitronic -- for the A7 Sportback with front-wheel drive. In contrast to the quattro S tronic, the clutches are no longer radially stacked but rather axially positioned one behind the other. They can be separately supplied with oil as needed. Their compact size allows for low moments of inertia at whichever clutch is inactive. Power flows from the output shaft via a spur gear to the pinion shaft first and then to the front-axle differential.
The dual-clutch transmission houses a centrifugal governor in its dual-mass flywheel. Its masses, one attached to each side of the flywheel, move so as to offset the engine's torsional vibrations. The centrifugal governor significantly reduces these unwanted vibrations -- particularly between 1,200 and 1,400 rpm. The engine can consequently operate at very low engine speeds.
Audi's new seven-speed S tronic has two separate oil supplies. A 4.5-liter circuit of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) services the dual clutch and mechatronics, comprising the control/operation module as well as electronic, electrical and hydraulic components. The wheel set and the differential are lubricated by 3.5 liters of high-viscosity MTF (Manual Transmission Fluid). Sharp lines, emphasized horizontals, athletically taut surfaces– the design of the A6 models epitomizes precision and sporty elegance. It was carefully honed as part of the model refresh, with changes made to the Singleframe grille, the headlights, air inlets, bumpers, side sills, rear lights and tailpipes. Audi optionally offers headlights with LED technology or Matrix LED technology, combined with dynamic turn signals.

New engines
The engine lineup for the new A6 and A6 Avant includes three TFSI units with output ranging  between 140 kW (190 hp) and 245 kW (333 hp) and five TDI units ranging from 110 kW (150 hp) to 240 kW (326 hp). All engines comply with the limits of the Euro 6 emission standard, and their CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 22 percent. At Audi, the most efficient gasoline and diesel engines bear the “ultra” label. Combined with the all‑new S tronic transmission, the 1.8 TFSI ultra consumes just 5.7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (41.3 US mpg), corresponding to 133 grams CO2 per kilometer (214 g/mi). The 2.0 TDI ultra with 110 kW (150 hp) achieves the extremely low consumption figure – with no restrictions with respect to equipment – of 4.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (56.0 US mpg) corresponding to 109 grams CO2 per kilometer (175.4 g/mi).
The top gasoline engine, the 3.0 TFSI, has been comprehensively revised. The engine developers have also completely redesigned numerous aspects of the 3.0 TDI clean diesel, which is available with either 160 kW (218 hp) or 200 KW (272 hp). The 3.0 TDI clean diesel biturbo produces 235 kW (320 hp). Another version with 240 kW (326 hp), which can be boosted briefly to 255 kW (346 hp), powers the A6 3.0 TDI competition and A6 Avant 3.0 TDI competition special‑edition models, with which Audi is celebrating the 25 years of TDI technology.
The high‑performance diesel is paired with an eight‑speed tiptronic. All other engine variants work together with either a newly designed six‑speed manual transmission that is particularly lightweight and low-friction, or a seven‑speed S tronic. In the versions with front-wheel drive, a fully redeveloped dual-clutch transmission replaces the multitronic. In engine configurations starting at 200 kW (272 hp), quattro permanent all‑wheel drive can be supplemented with the sport differential, which actively distributes power between therear wheels.
The chassis with its sophisticated wheel suspensions also combines supreme comfort with sporty handling. The Audi drive select dynamic handling system is standard, and Audi offers a choice of two sport suspensions and adaptive air suspension as options. In the A6 Avant 2.0 TDI ultra with 140 kW (190 hp), the springs are made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) – an Audi innovation that saves approximately 4.4 kilograms (9.7 lb) of weight, reduces fuel consumption and improves both driving precision and vibrational comfort. The wheels measure between 17 and 20 inches diagonal.



New infotainment
The new A6 models are also way ahead of the competition when it comes to infotainment, with configurations ranging up to MMI navigation plus with MMI touch. The top-of-the-line navigation system with the power-retractable eight‑inch monitor is now based on a new technology platform that uses the fast Tegra 30 graphics chip from Audi’s partner Nvidia. The supplemental module Audi connect transfers data via the fast LTE standard and brings tailored online services into the car, including new media streaming apps.

Delivery of the new Audi A6 family willbegin in fall 2014. The base price in Germany for the Sedan with the 1.8 TFSI will be €38,400; the A6 Avant 1.8 TFSI begins at €40,900 and the A6 allroad quattro 3.0 TDI at €56,650. The Audi S6 is priced at €75,400, and the Audi RS 6 Avant lists for €108,900.
